Creative & Enrichment Classes is a series of classes meant to engage adults & children in creative processes and to continue to expose RGV residents to the cultural arts.” The goal of the upcoming workshops is to connect local artists’ portions of the community interested in arts related events, thereby building a stronger community. With help from the city, the McAllen Chamber has created 21 low cost artist suites and office spaces for expanding artists and art organizations. The Cultural Arts Department houses artists of different art disciplines such as painters, choir instructors, writers, photographers and sculptors, just to name a few. The suite space available is a 12×12 at an affordable $190 a month.
The McAllen Creative Incubator has 2 paint labs, a classroom, stage and a variety of Exhibit areas for tenants use at no additional cost. McA2 is located at 601 N. Main St. in the heart of McAllen’s Art’s District.
To apply for studio space, interested artists need to submit a completed application. *Applications can be pick-up at the Creative Incubator located at 601 N. Main Street, McAllen or download the file at http://www.mcallenart.com/studio-directory. Applications are accepted on a continual basis.

This month of November the McAllen Creative Incubator features artist Miriam Smith. It will be her third art exposition at McA2. While every medium is important to her, Porcelain is her passion. The other mediums that will be displayed include Landscapes painted in oil and a series of Acrylics, which she has titled “Imaginings”.
Miriam, who also studied art in California, fondly recalls those distinguished artists she once worked and learned from, like Barbara Jensen, Jene Harpor and Celee Evans. The distinguished artists is proud to have studied alongside Birget Porter, who is also a Porcelain Painter that studied at the Royal Palace in Germany.
“Porcelain painting, is a beautiful way to display art in your home or office.” Said Mrs. Smith, “art is like a treasure that can be passed on from generation to generation, adding invaluable worth to it as the years go by.”

Kylie Garcelon is the Director for an upcoming feature film production in our area called The Heart of Christmas, a Christmas film. The film is being produced by Tara Pirnia of Future Sight Entertainment, LLC.
There are a variety of roles being cast and we want to support the local community by engaging local talent.

Auditions for the colibrí children’s choir will be held on Saturday, September 8 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the McAllen Creative Incubator (601 N. Main). No appointment is needed. For those unable to come at this time, please call 956.307.6074 to arrange an alternate time. First rehearsal will be Sunday, September 9, 2018.
The colibrí children’s choir is a community, auditioned treble choir for students in first through tenth grade. Students are selected on the basis of their aural and vocal potential, their desire to sing, their ability to learn quickly and their willingness to work hard. Children from public, private, parochial, charter, and home schools meet Sunday afternoons for rehearsals and musicianship classes, which are designed to teach music literacy. The choir performs at least two concerts each year at the McAllen Creative Incubator and has appeared at McAllen’s Christmas in the Park and Fourth of July programs, at Quinta Mazatlán, Edinburg’s Scenic Wetlands, and St. George’s International Festival. The choir meets in the Gallery of the McAllen Creative Incubator, 601 N. Main Street.
A $20 registration fee is required at the time of audition.

Carol J. Brown, director of colibrí music studio and children’s choir, was a music specialist in McAllen ISD for 18 years, at IDEA Quest for 4 years, and at Stuart Place Elementary in Harlingen for 4 years. She has taught general music preK-6 and conducted a select choir. Her Navarro Children’s Choir twice appeared at state and national music teachers conventions in San Antonio, Texas.
She received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas – Austin and a Master of Music Education from Indiana University – Bloomington where she also studied Folklore and Ethnomusicology. She earned a Two-Year Diploma from the Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemét, Hungary, and she studied horn at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Each summer she teaches in the Kodály certification program at Portland State University. She plays horn with the Valley Symphony Orchestra and South Texas Lyric Opera. Ever since her work with Dr. Mary Goetze and the Indiana University Children’s Choir, Ms. Brown has been passionate about teaching children to sing.
