The McAllen Heritage Center invites you to their opening reception for their featured collection titled “Life! The Joy of It!” by local McAllen artist Linda Jean. The recpetion will take place Friday June 19, 2015 from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm. Lina Jean has been the recipient of numerous art awards over the years and still continues to produce mulitiple paintings a week. Her paintings grace the homes of hundreds of families and businesses throughout North America.

Each summer the colibrí children’s choir hosts a summer choir camp.

McAllen Selects Second City Poet Laureate

The McAllen Arts Council has selected its second poet laureate. Priscilla Celina Suarez will serve in her position until December 31, 2016. She takes over the position from Olga Valle-Herr, who served in the position previously.

Suarez, a lifelong resident of McAllen, is an employee at the McAllen Public Library, working in the marketing department. She has a degree in International Business from UTPA.

“We are so proud that the McAllen Arts Council has selected such a talented poet,” said Nancy Millar, Vice President and Director of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce’s Convention and Visitors’ Bureau which oversees the arts program for the Chamber.” She will be a wonderful representative of literary arts for the city.”

Suarez has loved poetry since she was a small child. “When I was in the third grade, I was selected to read a poem to our school principal,” Suarez said. He laughed out loud, and I realized that I loved it.”

In 2005 she began original readings at various venues around the county and beyond. Her reputation has grown to make her one of the area’s foremost poets.

“All of us at the McAllen Public Library are so proud of Priscilla for becoming Poet Laureate of McAllen,”  said Kate Horan, Director of the McAllen Public Library. “Priscilla’s poetry explores language and questions of identity as a native of the Rio Grande Valley in a way that is both strong and vulnerable. I can’t think of a better poet to represent McAllen.”

Suarez’s mentors include well known poet and author Gloria Anzaldua,   and McAllen resident Jan Seale, Texas’s immediate past State Poet Laureate. “Jan is a superhero,” Suarez said. “She was one of the first people I heard performing the spoken word, and she was hilarious. She’s so supportive of literary events and the arts in general.”

New Basic Nature Photography Class at the McAllen Creative Incubator

If you have a camera and want to learn, nature photographer Ruth Hoyt has the perfect class for you. She teaches a fun, interactive four-week evening class at the McAllen Creative Incubator starting this week on Wednesday, May 6th. To provide the participants with some hands-on time in the field, the class includes one Saturday morning field trip.

All cameras are welcome in Ruth’s class, including digital, film, SLR and point-and-shoot cameras. For those with complicated schedules or other special situations, Ruth does private instruction as well. Contact her for more details.

The basic nature photography class runs May 6th through 27th and takes place four consecutive Wednesdays.

Participants learn, hands-on, about their camera’s parts, features and handling. In addition, class time is spent viewing photographs and discussing composition, lighting and other technical aspects of photography. Participants can also expect to learn about some of the local flora and fauna.

The class takes place from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the McAllen Creative Incubator in McAllen (the former McAllen Public Library), 601 North 10th Street, for four Wednesday nights, as well as a Saturday morning field trip May 16th.

Cost for the four-week basic nature photography class is $250. Two people who register together receive a discount.

Asian Summer Camp at the McAllen Creative Incubator

With the help of the McAllen Arts Council-Grant Program, Lian Shingler is able to bring a unique Summer Camp program to the Creative Incubator. The Asian culture summer camp is an exciting one week program that will provide a wonderful insight and exploration of Asian culture. Students will participate in a Chinese language course, Chinese Martial Art kung fu ” shao Lin” wushu , which incorporates Jet Lee style, Magic class and Craft activities, like mask painting, chinese calligraphy and paper cut crafts. The program will have invited Magicians who will teach students magic tricks.
