City Poet Laureate Priscilla Suarez & CVB VP Nancy Millar

“This is an exciting, educational program for McAllen,” said Laura Robles,Cultural Arts & Incubator Coordinator. “The Arts Council is very pleased to initiate this program, which will aid in drawing attention to the literary arts.”

“While public art such as sculptures and murals is beginning to become more visible around town, the McAllen Arts Council recognized that there were limited options for presenting literary arts to the community,” explained Nancy Millar, Vice President and Director of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce’s Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. “Having an official City Poet Laureate offers many opportunities to incorporate poetry into official functions,” she said.

The Poet Laureate will hold the title through 2020.

Poets who live, work, attend school or attend worship services in McAllen may apply themselves, or can be nominated by another individual. Applications are available online at and at the McAllen Chamber and McAllen Creative Incubator offices located at 1200 Ash Avenue and 601 North Main Street respectively. Deadline for applications to be returned to the McAllen Chamber of Commerce is November 10, 2017 at 5:00 pm.
