McAllen Selects Second City Poet Laureate

The McAllen Arts Council has selected its second poet laureate. Priscilla Celina Suarez will serve in her position until December 31, 2016. She takes over the position from Olga Valle-Herr, who served in the position previously.

Suarez, a lifelong resident of McAllen, is an employee at the McAllen Public Library, working in the marketing department. She has a degree in International Business from UTPA.

“We are so proud that the McAllen Arts Council has selected such a talented poet,” said Nancy Millar, Vice President and Director of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce’s Convention and Visitors’ Bureau which oversees the arts program for the Chamber.” She will be a wonderful representative of literary arts for the city.”

Suarez has loved poetry since she was a small child. “When I was in the third grade, I was selected to read a poem to our school principal,” Suarez said. He laughed out loud, and I realized that I loved it.”

In 2005 she began original readings at various venues around the county and beyond. Her reputation has grown to make her one of the area’s foremost poets.

“All of us at the McAllen Public Library are so proud of Priscilla for becoming Poet Laureate of McAllen,”  said Kate Horan, Director of the McAllen Public Library. “Priscilla’s poetry explores language and questions of identity as a native of the Rio Grande Valley in a way that is both strong and vulnerable. I can’t think of a better poet to represent McAllen.”

Suarez’s mentors include well known poet and author Gloria Anzaldua,   and McAllen resident Jan Seale, Texas’s immediate past State Poet Laureate. “Jan is a superhero,” Suarez said. “She was one of the first people I heard performing the spoken word, and she was hilarious. She’s so supportive of literary events and the arts in general.”

Suarez will be performing at Chamber of Commerce events and is available for organizations, classrooms, and other venues. She can be reached at the McAllen Public Library, 956-681-3000.
